Wae Rebo is an old village with unique architecture, which is isolated located in a beautiful mountain landscape in the Manggarai in West Flores. It consists of 7 traditional circular and cone-shaped buildings called Mbaru Niang, which means in the Manggarai language "Drum houses". The village is only reachable after a 3-4 hour hike (depending on your physical condition). The village offers visitors not only the opportunity to see authentic Manggarai architecture but also to participate in the life of the local community. The hike leads along a narrow path through dense rain forest with various ferns, orchids and palm trees and we will be accompanied by the singing of many different birds
Wae Rebo is the only traditional Manggarai ethnic village with traditional houses. It is located at an altitude of 1,125 m above sea level among the Nature Conservation forest. There are now 7 traditional houses or Mbaru Tembong and each of them houses more than one family. The people live on agricultural products like coffee beans, taro and vegetables. Toward the end of the trip you will be required to trek uphill about 3 to 4 hours passing rain forests and nature pools. Participants will be picked up at respective hotels.
ITENERARY DAY 01 : LABUAN BAJO - DENGE or DINTOR Meeting point at the airport with our guide and then start Drive inland observing the beautiful panoramic views, villages and rice fields. Lunch at local restaurant in Lembor or picnic lunch. Afternoon drive till Denge and stay overnight at locals house. Spend the rest of the afternoon interacting with locals.
DAY 02 : DENGE - WAEREBO On this day, you make a beautiful but demanding hike through lush green mountain country to the village of Wae Rebo. In the past the people of Manggarai lived in huge round houses with space for up to 200 people. When the Dutch came, these homes were demolished because they found them to by not hygienic. So, this ancient treasure was lost. But hidden in the mountains a couple of this mythical houses have been preserved and renovated by the local community together with a team of architects based in Jakarta and the Indonesian Government. Wae Rebo is tucked away in a spectacular surrounding and is only accessible on foot. You will be welcomed as guests of honor with a special ceremony. You stay the night in this village and have plenty of time to see the local way of life. Most people here work from early morning until the dusk in the gardens, harvest coffee or are busy with the traditional processing of coffee beans. You will be overwhelmed by the calm and the beauty of this place. There is no electricity, no cell phone signal, no Mopeds. You will overnight at the Mbaru Niang, dine together with the Wae Rebo community and sleep on a Tikar, a woven mat made of pandanus leaf and get an impression of how was the life as extended families lived under one roof. Trek up hill through the rain forest to reach Wae Lomba - a creek as the first stop after about a one hour trek from Denge. Here the atmosphere of being in the forest is real while sometimes the song of Asian Paradise Flycatcher could be heard. Proceed then to reach Post 2 at Pocoroko a vantage point for picturesque views toward Savu sea in the south. It is the last place for cellular phone connection services available. The next stop will be at Nampe Bakok - a place where you will have a complete view over the traditional village of Wae Rebo. Arrive at Wae Rebo by midday. Lunch and dinner will be provided at the village. Spend your whole afternoon in the village to comprehend the local's way of life and its surrounding. Your overnight stay will be provided at a traditional house to share the experience of being in the locals home.
DAY 03 : WAEREBO - DENGE - LABUAN BAJO Spend your morning in the village to experience the morning life of the peasants and then trek the same way back but this time you walk downhill until reaching a point where the car is waiting to bring you back to Labuan Bajo. Lunch will be provided en route. Arrive in Labua Bajo by late afternoon or early of the evening.
DAY 4 : HOTEL - MIRROR STONE CAVE - AIRPORT If your time flight on the afternoon we will take you to go to Mirror stone cave in Labuan Bajo. We spend 30 minute to see the Crystal light stone inside in the cave. Children policy The program is not suitable for children unless they can endure trekking up hills for more than 3 hours a day.
